First new patch of the year and it’s gonna be a big one! Hold on to your hats because we got new items, a new champion, new skins, and a TON of gameplay updates. Welcome to the first patch of the year, Patch 5.0!

And suddenly it’s 2024?!?! Did you miss us? We missed you! We have a big patch for you today. Get ready for a new champion, new items, new map changes, new game mechanic changes, and MORE! Welcome to the first patch of the year, Patch 5.0! Go do yourself a favor and run to the washroom and get some water. This is gonna be a long one.

SYNDRA, THE DARK SOVEREIGN

Syndra is a fearsome Ionian mage with incredible power at her command. As a child, she disturbed the village elders with her reckless and wild magic. She was sent away to be taught greater control, but eventually discovered her supposed mentor was restraining her abilities. Forming her feelings of betrayal and hurt into dark spheres of energy, Syndra has sworn to destroy all who would try to control her.

Syndra will be released on January 18 at 00:01 UTC.

NEW FEATURES

COMPANIONS

Companions (beta test) are officially live! Your most loyal buddies are now ready to witness all your moments of glory by your side. A total of 29 Companions will make their debut in Patch 5.0.0. Meet Draghorn and Fluffiee, magical creatures that come in a range of styles!

  • Your Companion will follow you around in-game and cheer for you!
  • Your Companion will not reveal your position. When you're not visible to the enemy, your Companion won't be visible to them either.
  • Your Companion will temporarily go into hiding at the right time so that you can focus on battle.
  • Companions do not appear in Legendary Ranked and Arena.

The Companion system, Exploring Expedition, will be available shortly after the patch goes live. Look forward to unlocking your Travel Journal and plenty of rewards! What are you waiting for? It's time to gather your Companions and go for a walk around the Rift!

The long-awaited Aurelion Sol rework is here! These changes will make sure he can deal more effective damage and crowd control during team fights.

  • Base Stats

If the target is a champion, Aurelion Sol gains 1 stack of Stardust. Damage dealt based on the target's maximum Health is capped at 100 against monsters.

When enemies are killed within the black hole's range, Aurelion Sol gains 5 stacks of Stardust for every champion or epic monster killed; 3 stacks of Stardust for every siege minion or large monster killed; and 2 stacks of Stardust for every minion or small monster killed.

    • [New] The Skies Descend: Whenever Aurelion Sol collects 65 stacks of Stardust, the next Falling Star transforms into The Skies Descend. Aurelion Sol rains down cosmic fury on the earth, dealing (187.5/312.5/437.5 + 81.25% Ability Power) magic damage over a larger area and knocking enemies hit Airborne for 1 second. He also emits a huge shockwave at the same time, dealing (150/250/350 + 65% Ability Power) magic damage to enemy champions and epic monsters. All enemies hit are slowed by 50% for 1 second and revealed for 1.5 seconds.

GRAGAS

  • Body Slam

    • When Gragas dashes using Body Slam, he can also cast Barrel Roll.

LEE SIN

  • Dragon's Rage

    • [Removed] Launches a powerful roundhouse kick at an enemy champion, dealing (200/425/650 + 200% bonus Attack Damage) physical damage and knocking them back. Enemies the target collides with along the way are knocked Airborne for 1 second and take (200/425/650 + 200% bonus Attack Damage) physical damage, and bonus physical damage equal to 12/15/18% of the target's bonus Health.
    • [New] Launches a powerful roundhouse kick at an enemy champion, dealing (100/300/500 + 200% bonus Attack Damage + 10/13/16% of the target's maximum Health) physical damage and knocking them back. ZYRA

Zyra’s plants have run rampant on the Rift. We've nerfed the duration of Zyra's crowd control abilities and adjusted the power of her plants. Let’s call it spring cleaning!

  • Base Stats

    • Active duration of a Thorn Spitter: 8s → 6s
    • Health of a Thorn Spitter: (40~628) + 10% Ability Power → (20~260) + 35% Ability Power
  • GRASPING ROOTS

    • Rooting duration: 1.25/1.5/1.75/2s → 1/1.25/1.5/1.75s
  • STRANGLETHORNS

    • Area of Effect: 500 → 430

CHAMPION CAMEOS

AURELION SOL

Aurelion Sol sporadically generates a cosmic field that grants Movement Speed to players within and helps them ignore obstacles.

KAI’SA

When a player takes down Kai'Sa, they gain the following buff for 15 seconds: Every time they deal damage, they automatically cast Icathian Rain at all players.

PANTHEON

Pantheon thrusts his spear at the target location, dealing damage to the target based on their max Health. Upon landing, the spear sweeps across its surroundings and deals damage to enemies within range based on their max Health.

NASUS

Nasus makes random appearances on the battlefield, and taking him down grants Ascension.

  • Ascension: 200% size and increased Armor and Magic Resist; and the cooldown of your first ability is reduced to 1 second. If the ability stores charges, charge(s) will also be refunded. The buffs last 10 seconds.

MORGANA

Players near Morgana gain crowd control immunity.

NEW AUGMENTS

ARCANE OVERFLOW

  • Build up Comet Force after casting an ability. Dealing ability damage to a champion launches several comets toward their position, dealing magic damage that scales with bonus Attack Damage and bonus Ability Power. Comet Force builds up infinitely.

ARTILLERY COVERAGE

  • Fires Ashe's, Ezreal's, Jinx's, Lux's, and Senna's Ultimate abilities at a target location at the same time.

BACKUP BATTERY

  • Upon death, reanimate temporarily with increased stats while bleeding for 7 seconds, after which you die again.

BATTLE MAGE

  • Gain bonus Health, Armor, and Magic Resist based on Ability Power.

BLACK HOLE

  • Summon a Black Hole centered around you, pulling enemies nearby toward you while stealing their Armor and Magic Resist.

BUTTER ROLL

  • Your first ability gains 100 Ability Haste.

CHEESE ROLL

  • Your third ability gains 100 Ability Haste.

DUAL WIELD

  • Gain increased Attack Speed and max Attack Speed, but Attack Damage and Ability Power are reduced.

MIRROR IMAGE

  • At regular intervals, become invisible for a few seconds and project a mirror clone that moves toward the enemy. The mirror clone explodes near enemies or when destroyed, blinding nearby enemies.

FORTUNE COIN

  • Toss a Fortune Coin. If it lands face up, heal for 10% of your max Health. If it lands face down, a bolt of lightning strikes at your current position, dealing true damage equal to 10% of your max Health. There is a small chance to trigger an Easter Egg for additional bonuses.

FULL STEAM AHEAD

  • Become Unstoppable while moving freely and gain sustained Movement Speed. You can only stop moving upon recast or collision with enemies or terrain, after which you deal magic damage to nearby enemy champions.

HEAD BLOWN

  • Attacks have a 60% chance to stun for 0.2 second(s).

JAM ROLL

  • Your second ability gains 100 Ability Haste.

MANA AEGIS

  • When you have more than 40% Mana, 40% of your damage taken is converted into Mana loss instead. When you're healed, 40% of your healing received is gained as Mana as well. (Mana loss does not trigger events based on Mana consumption, but Mana regeneration triggered by heals will increase based on healing bonuses.)

PLANETARY RING

  • Gain 3 aerial bullets that orbit you, dealing magic damage to enemies they hit. The bullets orbit at max attack range and do not apply any on-hit effects. Orbital speed scales with Attack Speed.

REPRISAL ARMOR

  • Store a percentage of damage taken over a period of time as Fury. At regular intervals, consume all Fury to deal magic damage to enemies nearby.

SCHRODINGER’S HEALTH BAR

  • Your Health bar is permanently Camouflaged and hidden from enemy view.

SUBJUGATE

  • Drain life equal to 30% of their max Health from a target (dealt as magic damage) and steal 40% of their Armor and Magic Resist. Half of the damage and stealing happen immediately and the other half happens over 5 seconds. The stolen Armor and Magic Resist are returned to the target 4 seconds after the drain ends.

TROPICAL PUNCH

  • Gain increased effects from Power Flowers and share them with your ally.

UNBROKEN

  • All excess incoming damage above 15% of your max Health is reduced by 50% (all damage exceeding this threshold will be reduced by 50%, including true damage).

UNKNOWN DAMAGE

  • Deal damage ranging between 50% and 175%.

WHALE

  • Increases your item limit and grants you a random item before the start of every battle. You can have a max of 12 items at any one time. You also deal 1 bonus damage for every 500 gold you have more than your target.

AUGMENT CHANGES

AUGMENTS QUANTITY

  • Quantity is increased to 6. Compared to during the early access season, most teams can now obtain all the Augments before they're eliminated.

RECOMMENDED AUGMENTS

  • Augments suitable for your champion are marked with indicators. If no Augment is selected when time is up, the recommended Augment will be selected by default.

AUGMENT REFRESH

  • While Augments can be refreshed three times, if the player loses a round in between 2 Augment selection rounds, they'll gain 2 more refresh chances.

SURRENDER

  • You can surrender the game if your teammate goes AFK or enables AI control of their champion.

CAMERA

  • You can pan the camera, or zoom in and out while spectating.
  • Added a camera displaying the champion that places first.

POWER FLOWER

  • A new notification will pop up when Power Flowers are available, and more Power Flowers will be added.

SYSTEM FEATURES

CHAMPION BALANCE

  • In this update, we've made balance adjustments to 76 champions for Arena. We've also implemented fixes for mages, marksmen, and support champions so that they won't find themselves facing disadvantageous situations so easily anymore, unlike during the early access season.
  • Melee champions will receive bonus base Health, bonus Armor and Magic Resist, and bonus base Health Regen.
  • Ranged champions will receive bonus base Health, bonus Armor and Magic Resist, bonus Movement Speed, and bonus Ability Haste.
  • Champion Critical Strike Damage is increased from 175% to 190%.
  • Fully upgraded items now cost 3,000 gold each, and their stats have been rebalanced: every Ability Power item in this mode will now provide 7% Magic Pen and 7% Critical Rate. In addition, items can also be sold at their original price during the shop phase.

NEW TEAMFIGHT PHASE

  • Added a casual teamfight round. Teams that haven't been eliminated will enter the same battlefield for an all-out brawl. Survive as best as you can during this round to earn more rewards!
  • This round has a fixed duration of 60 seconds. No reductions will be made to team Health when the round ends.
  • This round will always take place on the same map (Ancestral Woods).
  • There is no win/loss mechanic in the teamfight round, and the round will not break win streaks.
  • The map will randomly spawn new heal items (restore 350 Health) and hats. (The outer, middle, and inner rings all randomly respawn hats and heal items at 5-second intervals at a respawn chance of 50%.)
  • Killing enemies will cause them to drop 50% of their hats first and then spawn 4 additional hats. Hats that have been picked up will carry forward after the teamfight round.
  • After the teamfight round, the surviving team with the most hats (>0) gains 25 team Health. If there is more than one team with the same number of hats, and this number is the highest out of all the teams, all the teams with this number of hats will gain 25 team Health (max team Health can exceed 100).
  • Champions cannot be resurrected during the teamfight round. The round ends when time is up, or when there is only one surviving team.

EASTER EGGS

STACK ‘EM HATS

  • Minions will randomly spawn with hats. Kill the hatted units to wear the hats yourself!

Lunar Dumpling

  • When a minion or monster is killed, there is a chance that it'll drop a dumpling. Pick it up to restore Health and gain a temporary Movement Speed boost.

Red Envelope Clash

  • When a unit with a red envelope is killed, all champions within range gain a random amount of gold.

  • Every 2.5 → 1.75 seconds, your next attack deals bonus physical damage equal to 25 + 3% bonus Health (also applies to turrets), creating a shockwave that deals physical damage equal to 80 + 10% bonus Health to enemies behind the target. (Ranged champions deal 75% of the damage.)

Colossal Consumption

  • While within 700 units of an enemy champion, charges for 3 seconds before dealing a huge strike against the enemy champion. This charged attack deals bonus physical damage equal to 120 + 5% of maximum Health, and grants maximum Health equal to 12% → 15% of the damage dealt. The charge for each target has a 20-second cooldown.

MANTLE OF THE TWELFTH HOUR

Lifeline

  • [Removed] Damage that puts you under 35% Health grants a heal for 200 + 50% bonus Health over 3 seconds, and provides 50% Slow Resist and 30 Movement Speed for 3 seconds. (90s cooldown)
  • [New] Damage that puts you under 35% Health grants bonus max Health equal to 200 + 50% bonus Health over 3 seconds, and provides 50% Slow Resist and 30 Movement Speed for 3 seconds. (90s cooldown)

RANDUIN'S OMEN

Determination

  • [Removed] When you are critically struck, gain Determination equal to 25% (melee)/18% (ranged) of the pre-mitigation damage for 5 seconds, up to a maximum of 500. When you attack an enemy champion, consume all Determination and heal yourself for the same amount.

RELOCATION OF HONEYFRUITS IN THE BARON LANE

We've relocated the Honeyfruit behind the turret, with the aim of preventing champions with longer attack ranges from easily destroying their opponent's fruits.

GAME MECHANICS CHANGES

NEW MINION: CANNON MINION

During the laning phase, there is a significant discrepancy between the strength of the siege minion wave and the other minion wave. This poses challenges for players in making decisions about when to recall, roam, or provide support for their teammates. By replacing them with cannon minions, players should hopefully be able to concentrate on laning during the early game while having better control of the minion wave. This adjustment will also enhance lane experience points and gold, increasing the BaronLaner’s impact.

  • Siege minions that appear between 50s and 12min 5s from the start of the game are replaced with cannon minions.
  • The cannon minion has a ranged attack and is weaker than the siege minion, but is stronger than the melee minion. Overall, the strength of the minion waves remains consistent as before.

MINION WAVES EXPERIENCE POINTS

We are modifying the minion experience ratio in the different lanes.

  • In the first 7 minutes of the game, shared experience points from minion waves are reduced while solo laners gain higher experience points in the top and mid lanes. After 7 minutes, this experience points change will expire.

ADJUSTED EXPERIENCE CATCH-UP MECHANIC

The experience catch-up mechanic will trigger immediately when the champion falls below the average level by 1 level (previously was 0.75 level)

ADJUSTED EXPERIENCE POINTS FOR LEVELING UP

The experience points required to reach level 10 and above have increased. Champions need more experience to level up after reaching level 9.

SOLO ASSIST GOLD CHANGES

When only one champion assists with a takedown, the gold awarded for the assist will change from 50% of the bounty to 35% of the bounty.

There is no change when more than one champion assists with the takedown.

IN-GAME RUNE STATS FEATURE OPTIMIZATION

In Patch 4.4, we launched the Rune Stats feature and in this patch, we've improved it.

  • New stats added to several runes
  • Optimized statistical rules for some of the rune stats

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES CHANGES

Taking into account player feedback and our analysis of game data, we've tweaked strategic objectives and fine-tuned how they trigger based on certain conditions.

  • Strategic objectives can be triggered earlier now.
  • The gold earned through some champion abilities and rune effects no longer affect strategic objectives, including:
    • Champion abilities: Twisted Fate's (P) Loaded Dice; Draven's (P) League of Draven; Pyke's (4) Death from Below
    • Rune effects: First Strike, Sweet Tooth

DRAGON SOULS BALANCE CHANGES

Infernal Dragon Soul

  • Damaging an enemy champion with attacks or abilities creates an explosion of 250 radius around the target, dealing adaptive damage equal to (110 + 20% bonus Attack Damage + 10% Ability Power → 135 + 25% bonus Attack Damage + 12.5% Ability Power). 5s cooldown.

Mountain Dragon Soul

  • After 5 seconds of not taking damage from enemy champions or turrets, gain a normal shield that absorbs (210 → 260) damage.

Ocean Dragon Soul

  • Recover Health equal to (150 + 30% bonus Attack Damage + 15% Ability Power + 6% bonus Health → 190 + 36% bonus Attack Damage + 18% Ability Power + 7.5% bonus Health) within 4 seconds of damaging an enemy champion with attacks or abilities. 6s cooldown.

Ice Dragon Soul

  • Damaging an enemy champion with an attack or ability marks them for 3 seconds. When the mark disappears, they are slowed by 50% briefly and take bonus true damage equal to (12%→ 15%) of the damage they take while marked. 15s → 12s cooldown.

CHANGES TO STACKING DAMAGE REDUCTION

This patch introduces new items with damage reduction and when combined with the champions' damage reduction abilities, it all becomes a little too much. So we are changing how damage reduction stacks. 

We've tweaked the calculations for stacking multiple percentage-based damage reduction effects. This adjustment will slightly reduce the overall benefit when damage reduction is stacked.

GHOST PORO CHANGES

The Ghost Poro is getting a makeover and will become the Jungle Spirit.

While patrolling, the Jungle Spirit will quickly move in front of enemies it detects and fear them before returning to its patrol route.

A new jungle camp has been added. When the Jungle Spirit is killed, it will charge at this jungle champ. Once the charging is complete, the Jungle Spirit will respawn from the camp.

RIFT HERALD OPTIMIZATION

We've adjusted how the Rift Herald selects its target and attacks to focus its aggro on turrets instead of minions (champions can still take a swing at them).

We've also added a minimap icon that appears when the Rift Herald is summoned. This gives players a clearer heads-up when it happens.

RUNE STACKS OPTIMIZATION

We've made adjustments so that the stacks for Conqueror and Kraken Slayer fall off at a rate of 1 stack per 0.5 seconds, the same as Lethal Tempo. (Previously, all stacks fell off.)

STORE OPTIMIZATION

In the first 30 seconds of the game, items can be sold at the original price.

The next purchasable fully upgraded item will be shown in advance near the store portal, along with the amount of remaining gold required.

PRACTICE MODE CHANGES

In Practice mode, players can purchase boot enchantments immediately at the start of the game.

NEW ITEM VFX

Lifeline

  • When taking damage greater than what the shield can absorb, a VFX of the shield breaking will occur.

Items that will be affected: Seraph's Embrace, Sterak's Gage, and Immortal Shieldbow.

SPELL VFX

Barrier

  • When taking damage greater than what the shield can absorb, a VFX of the shield breaking will occur.

HEXFLASH RUNE

The Hexflash rune replaces the Flash spell with Hexflash when Flash is on cooldown. However, when Hexflash is active, players cannot see the remaining cooldown of Flash.

  • An ignited fuse effect is added for Hexflash, showing the remaining cooldown time for Flash

IN-GAME ANNOUNCEMENTS OPTIMIZATION

  • Redundant in-game announcements are removed and several kill announcements are merged.
  • Highlighted the key milestone announcements that needed to be emphasized in-game.
  • Improved announcement intensity/format of value effects:
    • [New] When the dragon soul is obtained, a dragon soul effect is added to the obtainment announcement.
    • [New] Bounty information is added to kill announcements and new animation effects are added for players with bounty on the scoreboard.
  • Improved display effect of in-game chat kill announcements.
  • Improved announcements for turret damage or when inhibitor turrets are under attack.

BUFF STACKS DISPLAY OPTIMIZATION

The buff stacks number will be shown within 3 digits. Buff stacks that are 4 digits and above are abbreviated in thousands (K), such as 32.1K. The previous display was 999+.

POST-GAME ITEM STACKS DISPLAY OPTIMIZATION

Items with stacks will now display the stack count on the bottom right of their item icon at the end of game screen.

BARON NASHOR/ELDER DRAGON BUFF DISPLAY OPTIMIZATION

When a team obtains the Baron Nashor/Elder Dragon buff in a game, a countdown timer for that buff will appear.

CUSTOMIZED HUD, UPGRADED INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE

We've improved the in-game interface and interactive experience, as well as added new controls and an interface settings page.

  • When less than 10 seconds of cooldown remains for a player's teammates' Ultimate or spells, the number of seconds will appear next to their icons beside the minimap and on the scoreboard.
  • An 'in-game interface' section is added to the 'Controls' tab on the Settings page.
    • Players can customize the transparency of the HUD, the strategy panel, and the store, switch on or off the strategy panel timeline, and adjust the indicator style for attacking units.
    • Provide a default clean and simple HUD configuration for new players.
    • For existing players, their current settings are unchanged.

FLASH COMBO

If auto-aim is active while casting certain combo abilities, the champion will locate the most optimal enemy champion within range and dash toward them.

SOCIAL SYSTEM OPTIMIZATION

MOTIVATIONAL INTERACTION FEATURE

  • A motivational interaction feature has been added to the game loading screen. Players can tap the cheering or taunting Poro button to send out motivational or taunting messages, allowing them to interact with their teammates and opponents.
  • A motivational interaction effect has been added to the start of the game. Tap the Poro button in the top right corner to activate a special fireworks effect and boost morale! When all 5 team members tap the button, it triggers a continuous fireworks display!

OPTIMIZATION OF PARTY FORMATION

  • The open party panel in the lobby is upgraded to a party recruitment panel. In addition to the current open party settings, players can also view recruiting teams in the new tab.
  • Players can start an open party directly on the Party Finder screen.

NEW GUILD FEATURES

[New] Guild Profile

  • Players can check a guild's basic information and quickly join a guild on the guild profile.

[New] Wall of Fame

  • The Guild Leader can assign Wall of Fame slots to 5 members and set custom titles for them. The Wall of Fame is displayed on the Guild homepage and profile and is viewable by others.

OPTIMIZATION OF PRE-GAME INTERACTIONS

  • During the champion selection phase, an enhanced animation is added to the double smite notification, emphasizing the alert to make it more visible for the player and their teammates to check.
  • During the champion selection phase, prompts to improve unusual team lineups are added to prevent players from making the wrong choice.

COLLECTIONS

  • Gallery collections can now be set as home screen backgrounds.
  • Added a new portal to "Patch Collections" to the Main Menu. Tap the portal to enter and view all collections newly added in this patch.
  • Added a new feature to the top of Collections: "Patch Collections". This feature lets you view all the new skins and goodies added in the newest patch and provides a way to quickly access this content.
  • Collection Score (based on seasons) is used in Patch Collections. Once you've collected enough Collection Score from the current patch, you'll unlock rewards such as key visual artworks and animated emotes.
  • Collecting the required Collection Score for the patch will also light up a gold Poro icon, which will be displayed on the Collector leaderboard.
