  • VCT Stage 2 - Challengers EMEA Week 5: Fnatic, GUILD & Team Liquid lead the charge coming into playoffs

Jun 14, 2022

While it isn’t too surprising that Fnatic, GUILD and Team Liquid made it through to the pointy end of the tournament given their dominance throughout the group stages, they’re joined by FunPlus Phoenix and Acend from Group A, and Group B’s M3C.

Looking for a recap of all of the action? Here’s everything you need to know about the events of VCT Stage 2 Challengers EMEA Week 5.

Group A: Fnatic qualify without dropping a match

While Masters Stage 1 didn’t quite go as planned for Fnatic, they’ve returned to the fray all guns blazing, with fire in their eyes and victory close at hand. Not dropping a single series, they took on longtime rivals G2 Esports across Icebox, Split, and Bind. While they did drop one map, the raw power of relative newcomer Emir Ali ‘Alfajer’ Beder’s Killjoy and Viper simply proved to much for Berlin’s samurai.

Qualifying alongside them is FPX and Acend, both of whom met in a battle for the ages in Week 5’s inaugural series. Again it was a back and forth affair, with FPX claiming Breeze. In a game of inches on Split, the reigning champions emerged triumphant, but we know that both teams will be hungry for a rematch coming into the playoffs.

Group B: An upset for GUILD

Despite having looked incredibly dominant throughout the tournament, GUILD looked a little shakier coming into Week 4, falling to NAVI in an upset for the ages. Being dealt their first defeat the weekend before playoffs, they’ll be coming into next week with something to prove; making them more deadly than ever before.

Their fellow playoff teams, Liquid and M3C, also faced off against one another this week, with Liquid beating the former Masters champions 2 - 0 across Icebox and Fracture. While both have qualified for next week, M3C will have Liquid in their sights following this tight loss.

While Group B’s scores look even, M3C progressed to the playoffs instead of BBL and NAVI as they took down both teams in their individual matches.
