There’s so much to discover in The Path of Champions 2.0 - be sure to check out The Path of Champions Re-Explained video and read below for more information.

The Big Question - What’s Happening to the Path of Champions?

The Path of Champions is hitting its 2.0 moment - we took a ton of learnings & feedback from our current iteration of The Path of Champions, doubled down on making champions feel more unique, enhanced & expanded on permanent progression systems, adjusted difficulty across the board to lower the floor & raise the ceiling, added a bunch of new Relics & Powers… the list goes on. It’s not the end of the road though, we’re still going to be actively looking for feedback and ways to continue improving The Path of Champions over time, so let us know how you feel about the new experience once it goes live!

It’s a completely overhauled experience, so we’re also resetting progression for all players, but everyone will receive rewards based on how far they progressed in The Path of Champions up to this point:

  • Complete any Adventure:
    • Scroll of Runeterra Card Back
    • Champion’s Vault (this is a special vault that contains champion fragments to unlock either Jhin or Annie, selected randomly)
  • Defeat Gangplank with any champion:
    • All above rewards
    • Plaque of Runeterra Card Back
    • Silver Vault (contains a handful of random champion fragments)
  • Defeat Viktor with any champion:
    • All above rewards
    • Gem of Runeterra Card Back
    • Champion’s Vault (this is a special vault that contains champion fragments to unlock either Bard or Illaoi, selected randomly)
  • Defeat Viktor with 3 different champions:
    • All above rewards
    • Adventuring! Emote
    • Gold Vault (contains a large number of random champion fragments)

You still have some time to take down Viktor before The Path of Champions 2.0 releases in patch 3.8.0 Wednesday (approximately 10-11AM PT), so get your last adventure runs in before then! We also expect this to be a one-time thing - with the release of The Path of Champions 2.0, we aren’t planning any future progression resets, but we’ll let everyone know ahead of time if that changes.

What’s Happening to the Champion Roster?

Not all champions from the mode’s current iteration are making it to The Path of Champions 2.0’s release (as selectable champions at least - they can still be recruited as support champions in an adventure). We do plan on eventually adding all champions to The Path of Champions 2.0, but due to the significant upgrades to each champion (unique adventures, Star Powers, higher level cap, etc.), we’ve launched with a more condensed roster.

All players start with Jinx unlocked, and you’ll be able to unlock new champions & upgrade their Star Levels by using Champion Fragments earned through completing adventures:

  • Jhin
  • Bard
  • Illaoi
  • Annie
  • Garen
  • Lux
  • Darius
  • Yasuo
  • Lee Sin
  • Miss Fortune
  • Jinx
  • Vi

What’s Happening to Existing Adventures?

We know players loved the Piltover & Zaun adventures we released during the RiotX Arcane event for Jinx, Vi, Ekko, Jayce, and Caitlyn. With the release of The Path of Champions 2.0, these adventures are temporarily going away, but we’re working to bring them back in the future.

Is The Path of Champions 2.0 Still Free to Play?

Yes! We mentioned back in the original FAQ that we were exploring forms of monetization that would help enhance the overall experience. We still aren’t ready to ship any monetized features right at launch, because we want to make sure they’ll be done in a way that will enhance the mode without taking away from the F2P experience.

Additionally, unlike the original release, you no longer need 2 copies of a champion to play them in The Path of Champions. Instead, as mentioned above, you’ll unlock them through Champion Fragments earned by completing adventures within the mode. You will still be able to enhance your PvP collection by completing quests within The Path of Champions as well.

Is The Path of Champions LoR’s New “Core” Game Mode?

While not about the features coming in 2.0, we’ve seen this question a lot, and it’s important to address! As mentioned back in our Early 2022 Roadmap video, The Path of Champions brought a lot of new players into the game, and a majority of players spend most of their time in the mode. This is still true today, though we know a significant number of PvP-exclusive players are concerned about PvE taking resources away from their favorite parts of the game.

We’re excited to keep expanding The Path of Champions & celebrate 2.0’s release since we know a bunch of our players love it, but the teams working on the mode & traditional PvP content (new expansions, live balance, a future draft mode, etc.) are largely separate. In fact, The Path of Champions relies on a constant stream of fun and unique champions & cards that are developed for PvP first and foremost.

We have no plans to reduce investment in either, and we’re working to make both the best experiences possible for all players who enjoy LoR, no matter which part of it they enjoy most.

Thanks for reading, and get ready to walk a brand new path when Worldwalker & The Path of Champions 2.0 on May 25!
