Competitive Update Aug 2023

Aug 28, 2023

In this quick update we’re going to be revealing prize details for LoR Worlds 2023, as well as an update on the Mystery Event. Suit up for some competitive LoR!

LoR Worlds

The Legends of Runeterra World Championship is back for our third year! Worlds will showcase the most skilled players battling it out for the crown.

Much like last year, we’re thrilled to bring a fresh meta to LoR before Worlds, allowing competitors’ strategic creativity to shine through. Players can expect our winter expansion to launch on Dec 6, with Worlds following the next week on December 14-16. All three days of competition will be streamed for your enjoyment, so make sure to tune in on Twitch and YouTube to cheer on your favorite players (and nab some deck codes).

This year’s championship will also feature our largest international competitive stage yet, with 64 participants from across the globe decking it out.

  • Day 1 Swiss Play (Top 64) (12|14): 7 Rounds of Swiss
    • Players with the best records advance, with tiebreakers will be determined by game win percentage, then opponent match win percentage.
  • Day 2 Top 16 (12|15): Double Elimination Bracket
    • Players will compete for a top 3 spot. After 2 match losses, you’re out of the tournament.
  • Day 3 Top 4 (12|16): Winners Bracket Finals, Losers Bracket Finals, & Grand Final
    • We’ll crown a new World Champion on the final day, there will be no bracket reset for the finals match.

  • Offer feedback on the art concept and initial sketches and be kept updated from concept to final illustration!

Last Chance Qualifier

Leading up to Worlds, we will run a Last Chance Worlds Qualifier on each Shard (Americas, APAC, EMEA). Whether you just missed the cut for Worlds, or haven’t played all year, now is your chance to claim one last chance to get to Worlds.

Players who have officially qualified in a previous season or Worlds Qualifier may not compete. If a player who wins an LCQ qualifies at a later date via Yearly or Season Worlds Points, that invite will pass down to the next best-finishing player in that category.

The Last Chance Qualifier will run just like a Runeterra Open on 11|25 - 11|26, with Day 1 featuring qualifier rounds where players must get the best record they can before either winning 9 or losing 3 rounds. Prime Glories will not be applicable for this event, so all players will be playing on an even playing field for this last shot of glory! This event will award Trophies as normal, but will not have Runeterra Open cash prizes. The Day 2 Final Match will still take place for the Glory, but 1st and 2nd place both directly qualify for the World Championships in December!

Additionally, players who get at least 3 wins during Day 1 of the Last Chance Qualifier will receive the following special edition Worlds Badge:

Players who advance to Day 2 will receive a Top 64 exclusive qualifier Pin. We’re keeping this pin’s design in the shadows for now, but expect it to provide a sneak peek of things to come!

Mystery Event

We announced the Mystery Event at the beginning of the year, and winners from previous Runeterra Opens (non-Worlds Qualifiers) from each region have been winning entrance to this event! To ensure we’ve got proper time to accommodate for international travel, all further Runeterra Opens no longer qualify winners for this event.

We will be in touch with qualified individuals and content creators soon! If you have won, keep an eye on your email inbox associated with your LoR account.

Our team has been hard at work figuring out logistics to get all of our international friends safely and comfortably to the Riot Campus in LAX. To accommodate this, the event will happen in the first months of 2024, giving attendees a sneak peek (and a chance to give advanced feedback on) some of the cool stuff we’re cooking up for the new year!

We’re excited to give participants the opportunity to meet other players and content creators in person, participate in some fun activities, and get some face to face time with the LoR team.
