Legends of Runeterra

LoR World Championship Points Overview

Jun 2, 2021

Not too long ago, we announced the Legends of Runeterra World Championship. Now, we’d like to share the guiding principles to explain why we went with this structure; along with more details on how the points are calculated.

In spirit, we want to create the absolute pinnacle of competition in Legends of Runeterra. The goal is to seek out the best-of-the-best LoR players and have them compete in the World Championship. Make no mistake, it’s not going to be a walk in the park; the bar is set high for our first-ever Legends of Runeterra World Championship.

Seasonal Tournament Finalists (20)

The bar to entry into the Seasonal Tournament is intended to be accessible to most players who are interested to give it a try. However, the way to win a Seasonal Tournament is still tough and gruelling. For players who qualified into a Seasonal Tournament, do your prepwork and play your very best to defeat as many worthy opponents as you can and you may well win a seat into the World Championship.

We are taking in the Top 4 players of every of our Seasonals Tournaments from Monuments of Power onwards. There will be 5 seasons in total leading up to the World Championship, hence a total of 20 players will qualify this way.

Seasonal Tournament Points (22)

With the above qualification, we acknowledge that this could be frustrating for players who enter Seasonal Tournaments consistently but always fall short of the Top 4.

Hence, we would like to give participants of the Seasonal Tournaments who have performed above average consistently throughout the seasons a chance to qualify for the World Championship. Starting from the Empires of the Ascended Tournament, each participant is awarded Seasonal Tournament Points depending on the number of wins they managed to achieve. For the Open Rounds, each win is worth one point, while each win in the Playoffs is worth 2 points. This means that participants can achieve a maximum of 18 points in Open Rounds and a maximum of 20 points in Playoffs.

Understandably, we’ve made changes to the Seasonal Tournament to be 9 rounds only recently; and also considered that the old reward structure was not enticing for players to play the full number of rounds. So for qualifying this year, Seasonal Tournament Points tabulation will only start from the Empires of the Ascended onwards. There will be 3 seasons in total to earn Seasonal Tournament Points and we will take in the Top 22 players at the end.

Ranked Qualification (22)

And finally, for players with time to invest and like to dedicate them to perfect their card slinging craft, there’s a way you may attempt to enter the World Championship by climbing the Ranked ladder. This method is the most time consuming - surely for players who wish to prove they have what it takes by hard work and skill, they would persevere!

We will award points to the Ranked Masters players in decreasing value based on the following table.

A player’s final Tournament points will be a combination of their best score in 2 out of the 5 qualifying seasons (from Monuments of Power onward). We decided to take the best 2 because climbing ranked into the Top 100 is a major time investment, and we know not every World-level player may be able to dedicate themselves to making the climb every season. With 2 out of 5 Seasons, you can pace yourself and decide after 2 solid climbs that it is enough; either that or aim for perfection and shoot for the ever coveted Rank 1 finish.

Whether you’ve been climbing since the start, or just want to start your climb now, there are 2 Seasons left after this announcement to attempt to qualify through Ranked.

What if a player qualifies from more than one method?

We will pass the slot down to next in line of the Seasonal Tournament Points leaderboard if:

  • A player enters Top 4 in more than 1 Seasonal Tournaments
  • A player enters Top 4 in a Seasonal Tournaments and also made in to the top cut of Seasonal Tournament Points leaderboard

We will pass the slot down to next in line of the Ranked qualification if:

  • A player enters Top 4 in a Seasonal Tournaments and also made in to the top cut of the Ranked Qualification leaderboard

And that’s it! Players hoping to earn a spot in the World Championship should start now and make progress towards the qualification! Have fun ascending the ranks, and may the odds be always in your flavor!
